MARILYN NUNES – Artistic Director

I always felt a pull towards performance, from a young age. When I was 13 I heard in a theatre class about the training and performances of Odin Teatret, and I immediately identified with the work. In 2009 I participated in a workshop led by Odin actress Iben Nagel Rasmussen in Columbia, and finally in 2012 I took part in a residency at Odin Teatret’s base in Denmark, where I got to work directly on training and on a performance, under Julia Varley’s direction.

For me, as I continue to learn and grow, I think of a master as someone who teaches you along a sustained period of time, advising and directing the pupil’s life according to personal and professional principles. In this sense, Julia Varley has become my master; she gives me tasks and challenges, advising me and encouraging me to develop new work. She has a direct impact in my working life, by guiding my training and directing my performances, but also in my personal life, which is intimately linked to my professional work as an actress.

Theatre entered my life as an urgent necessity from a young age, and this hasn’t changed; in fact, the more I work in theatre, the more of a key role it plays in my life. I look to the past, and at what I did yesterday or last year, and I can’t separate my artistic activities from the person I am, or how I define my place in the world. My necessity is renewed each day that I continue to work in the theatre.
