JOHN DEAN & BIANCA MASTROMINICO – Artistic Directors

After years of individual experience and professional practice, we met in the late 90’s and found each other in a state of creative restlessness. We started working together in a transcultural exchange of performance practice, forming little by little a common vocabulary for our work – we took our company name in 2002 from a pack of organic celery.

For me (Bianca) my first impulse to do theatre came from being born into a family with its own theatre and company, both founded in the early 70’s in Naples – the apprenticeship and experience I received from them was decisive. I (John) played the ‘cello in my teens, but was never really at ease doing so in front of other people – however when I had my first opportunity to be an actor, I experienced an expressive freedom and finally felt at home in theatre.

Theatre always brings us back to the human dimension and to acts of growth and spiritual becoming. Our ‘creative tension’, that very specific energy required to make things happen in theatre, combined with an inner impulse to be playful while exploring the possibilities of organicity and transformation through the work – this is the ground we trust and tread, and which has given us the privilege of rare encounters, while witnessing the personal and collective changes that theatre can conjure.
